Cemetery

Queen of Peace Catholic Parish, located at 102-4th Street, Cloquet, MN., has two Cemeteries, Old Calvary Cemetery located on Chestnut Street above Pinehurst Park, and New Calvary Cemetery located off the Big Lake road on Pinewood drive.

Old Calvary Cemetery was evolved the late 1890’s.  Sections A-F consists of elaborate monuments and many unmarked grave sites.  After the 1918 fire disaster many unidentified people were buried in Section B and F.  However wood markers were installed on some of the grave sites, but the weather elements over the years destroyed them.  Many immigrates moved to Cloquet in the early years for the logging industry, those immigrants who came were largely of French Canadian decent, and their presence is noted in the Cemetery by their last names on monuments.  A baby section is included in the Cemetery where infants are buried.

"God of the living and the dead, accept our prayers for

those who have died in Christ and are buried with in the

hope of rising again.  In your mercy, grant them eternal rest."

New Calvary Cemetery opened around 1958; this Cemetery was the passion for development by the late Father John O’Connell.  He worked many hours with volunteers and Boy Scout’s to level the grounds, plant trees, installed a road system, and plot out burial sites.  The Cemetery is about eight acres in size, with two acres used to date.
