Building and Grounds Committee
The Maintenance Department at Queen of Peace Church has a Building and Grounds Committee which meets on the First Tuesday of every month. Members of the committee are Bob Pfeffer, Clarence Badger, Paul Drechsler, Bud Belden, Herb Johnson, Dugan Nephew, Leo Braun, John Antus, Alvin Bryant and Mark Blomquist. Dick Daniels chairs the committee.
On June 23, 2009, a major roof failure in the school was discovered which required the building to shut down. Engineers and architects were called in and work began on finding a temporary new location for the students. We had only seven weeks to get ready for school. Due to his excellent past work on our church, we decided to hire Paul Wells of Lake Country Masonry to be our general contractor in charge of the project. By Aug. 23, 2009, the lower level school was completed, safety inspected and ready to occupy. We are grateful for the magnificent job done in such a short time and for the entire cost being covered by the insurance company. The lower level school looks absolutely beautiful!
Queen of Peace School students are presently attending the new temporary school in the lower level of our facility, and they are really enjoying it!
Asbestos floors and ceilings are being removed from the entire school before any construction can begin. The old wood truss roof system will be removed and a new steel roof will be installed. New ventilation and windows will be added as well as ceilings and lighting. New footings must be built under the school and steel pilasters and brick work on the side walls will be new. This plus all the detailed work involved in the reconstruction will start by mid-November. We should be able to be in the newly rebuilt school in the fall of 2010.
